"Kevin Phillips' last two years have been surrounded by speculation, but he is not being sold. I might be daft, but I'm not that daft," said the Sunderland boss.
"It hasn't been easy for him, but last Sunday he showed he was getting back to his old self. This was coming and I hope it is the start of another good run for him."
Wilkinson added: "This was crucial. If we'd lost, or at least if we hadn't shown that we could come back, I think we would have been dead."
