News out of Manchester that Sunderland actually where in the running for Dutch superstar striker Robin van Persie, before he settle for a move to Turkey.
It could well be the Dick Advocaat connection paper talk, as Sunderland have been linked with pretty much anyone that has kicked a football and who Dutch. But quite plausible gossip coming our way is that Sunderland was very much in the mix for the footballing legend’s signature after his services where no longer required at Old Trafford.
It’s fairly clear to any football fan that Sunderland wouldn’t be the only Premier League side that where interested in Van Persie, even at 31 years old, any team he did go to would be pretty much guaranteed goals.
Whatever the reason why any deal didn’t come off (if even there was one), it’s hugely encouraging that Sunderland could be deeply considered for such a player, and ambition from the club that just missed out on relegation, ambition to turn it around.
