Sunderland legend, messiah and all round top bloke, Sir Niall Quinn has spoken about his support for Sunderland AFC's owner Ellis Short. The American was on the receiving end of a mini back lash from a quantity of black fans over the lack of then summer signings.
Things weren’t helped by the media, who pretty much made stories up, and twisted statements, in a bid to wind up more frustrations from the Sunderland fans towards the chairman.
Since then Sunderland have landed several key players, both on permeant and loan deals (some with a view to make permeant), which now on reflection Quinn believes it was unfair criticism.
Quinn said “I think it’s very unfair. I think he came in at a critical time in the club’s history.”
“This man came in a stranger to the area, and he’s put more than just a pile of money into it, he’s put his heart and soul into it at times.”
“He’s put things in place that haven’t always worked out.”
“But he has spent money to do that and I think it’s most unfair that he gets that.”
