Wright was dismissed for two bookable offences just 23 minutes into the game leaving Sunderland to play for over an hour with just ten men.

"I have seen games where you have got this mythical 'amber card' and players have been given a reprimand after their first booking," the Sunderland boss said after the 2-0 defeat at Upton Park.

"It might have given me an opportunity to get Stephen off and replace him.

"But it was stupid of him to bring the opponent down on both occasions because his dismissal definitely changed the course of the game."
