Piper's injury means the Black Cats are now without seven players through injury with keepers Thomas Sorensen and Thomas Myhre and Argentinian Julio Arca three of those currently sidelined.
Meanwhile, midfielder Claudio Reyna will visit a specialist knee rehabilitation centre in America with his operation scheduled for November 18th. He is almost certain to miss the rest of the season.
