Brown, 28, was a target for The Black Cats in the summer since his former team-mate, Roy Keane, is a known admirer of the England international.

If a deal is not reached, the defender could leave The Red Devils on a Bosman free when his current contract expires in the summer.

Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the Mirror: "We feel it's a good offer and will not be going back."
