Macho put in some impressive displays for the Black Cats when Sorensen was out with a dislocated shoulder earlier in the season but when the Danish keeper returned to full fitness he was dropped from the first team.
"I need to play first-team football," Macho told The Journal.
"Losing my place in the team was one of my biggest disappointments in football. I'm at a stage in my career now where I need to be number one.
"It was a great honour for me to play for my country last year, I learnt much and gained much experience.
"But I have got to keep moving upwards, I have to progress."
