The Black Cats striker has been a big miss for the side since picking up an ankle injury back in March whilst on international duty for Scotland.
He has not played since, having had to undergo surgery on the problem, and in his absence the side skirted with relegation but thankfully managed to stay in the Premier League.
New boss Paolo Di Canio, who only succeeded Martin O'Neill in late March after Fletcher's injury, is looking forward to working with the striker next season.
He said in The Sun: "Steven was a big miss for us.
"It was frustrating not to be able to call on him when I took over and it will boost us to have him back."
