Premier League flop David Nugent has admitted that he regrets not going for Sunderland when given the opportunity instead picking championship bound and financially troubled Portsmouth.
Nugent made a name for himself at Championship club Preston North End scoring 15 goals in 43 games, gaining himself a place in the England International team coincidentally replacing Sunderland star Darren Bent who at the time played for Charlton and was injured. Scoring on his debut for England, and with such an eye for scoring goals he was noticed by several Premiership clubs, two of which were Sunderland and Portsmouth who both tabled 6 million pound bids for the striker. Choosing Portsmouth over the Black Cats, Nugent's career took a nose dive, after a string of poor performances he was destined for a life in Portsmouth's reserve squad, with then Manager Harry Redknapp publicly revealing that Nugent was free to find another club.
Eventually Burnley came to his recue by giving him a six month loan deal which was extended and he is still currently serving.
Nugent's is quoted saying .”Nobody really explained why I didn’t get a chance at Portsmouth.
I could have gone to Sunderland but I chose Portsmouth.”I think I made the wrong decision.
People make mistakes, you have to live with that.”But I’ve come back stronger, coming to Burnley.”
