Our thoughts go out to his family.
Harris, who was born in Worksop, joined the Clarets in 1958 and made his debut a year later.
He went on to play 313 times for the club during the glory years of the 1960s, and represented England once - in January 1966, when he replaced the injured Bobby Charlton in a 1-1 draw with Poland.
Harris also captained Burnley in 1967, a year before he left Turf Moor to join Sunderland for whom he made 126 appearances.
A statement from Burnley read: "The thoughts of everyone at Turf Moor are with Gordon's family and friends at this sad time."
