The draw leaves Sunderland 4th in the Barclays U21 Premier League, just three points behind league leaders Fulham with their next test against Wolverhampton Wanderers away on February 17.
Adam Mitchell scored either side of half time to earn his side a point that could quite easily have been converted into 3 in the late stages of the match.
Everton were very much the dominant force in the first half and took the lead after just 5 minutes. Harry Charsley turned on the edge of the box and neatly chipped the ball over Joel Dixon and into the Sunderland net.
After sustained pressure, Everton found themselves two up. Charsley fired the ball past Dixon again after a great pull back from Hallam Hope in the 40th minute.
Mitchell provided Sunderland with an instant reply though. George Honeyman’s effort fell fortuitously to Mitchell at the back post who made no mistake in front of goal and gave his side a lifeline going into the break.
Sunderland came out and looked a completely different side. Constant second half pressure eventually paid dividends when Mitchell latched onto a sublime cross-field pass from Martin Smith and struck a fine volley to level the game up.
