Ball Upset With Fans

The caretaker boss was disappouinted at hearing the chants of "sack the board'' and "Murray out'' ring around The Stadium of Light during the 1-0 home defeat which leaves Sunderland firmly rooted at the foot of the table and all but mathematically doomed to League Football next season.

"There is a time and place for demonstrations and I wish supporters had got behind the team during the game and kept their demonstrations until afterwards," Ball said after his first game in charge.

"As an ex-player you do know what is going on when you are out there and it does not help.

"Supporters have every right to air their views, but it would have helped if they had got behind the team instead.

"We need to put the smile back on the faces of everybody. We had a right go at Wigan and had a great spell after they scored a wonder goal.

"It was important that the players responded and it's then that you look round and see who the leaders are.''
