The Scot, a summer signing from Aberdeen, hasn't played for Sunderland since September but is unlikely to be risked until he returns to match-fitness.
Speaking about both Kieran Richardson and Russell Anderson, Roy Keane said: "Kieran had a final check-up yesterday and we are hoping he will be back in training next week.
"And Russell is getting there too, but we are still looking at a number of weeks before we can consider them playing in games, because they've both been out for three months or so.
"The fans have hardly seen anything of those two players since they signed in the summer and it will be a big help to us once they are fully fit again.
"It's a cliche, but they really will be like new signings for us."
