Born Adam James Matthews on the 13th Jan 1992, in Swansea, Wales.
Even at a young age he was a talented sportsman, who played rugby as well as football, being scouted by top Welsh rugby side the Ospreys aswell as Swansea Football Club.
Matthews choosing football had trials at Swansea, but breaking his arm he missed the opportunity join the Academy.
Once he returning to fitness he tried his hand in the Cardiff City trials where he was selected for their Academy at the age of 8. - This would lead him on to a professional contract years later.
In 2011 Matthews left Cardiff City for Scottish giants Celtic, he spent most of his time as back up for their first choice defenders. Coming off the bench several times, in both the Scottish Premiership and Champions League games, he has impressed in all.
Matthews also represented his home country of Wales at Under 17, 19 and 21’s over the years, and has further played for a Wales Senior squad in the Nations Cup.
Now signing for Sunderland for around 2 million pounds, reading the reactions of Celtic fans on twitter the consensus seems mainly positive.
Comments along the lines of Matthews having a lot of pace, and him never having a bad game, and how he likes to get forward and score the odd goal, many seem disappointed he’s left.
Playing in the English Premier League is an awful lot different than playing in the Scottish Premier League, let hope that Adam Matthews can adapt to it.
