McCarthy originally signed Whitehead from Oxford United back in 2004 for Sunderland, the midfielder has been a first team choice right the way through but with the arrival of Steve Bruce and the heavily linked move for Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole, Whitehead could find himself surplus to requirements at Stadium of Light.
